Vehicle Certification Label

What is it?

It is a permanently affixed plastic decal that includes your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN#) and additional encoded data about the features and equipment of your car such as:

  • Name of the Manufacturer
  • Month and year of production
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)
  • Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)
  • Certification Statement: "This vehicle conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards in effect on the date of manufacture shown above."
  • Vehicle class type

The label certifies that your vehicle complies with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) including bumper and theft prevention standards.

Depending on the make and model of your car it would be located in various locations and may not be located on a Vehicle Certification Label, but a Paint Identification Label. The diagram above provides you the location to find your Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) paint color code.

This is the same location where professional auto paint and body shops identify your paint color or from your VIN number itself. Therefore, this ensures that you are ordering the exact paint color match for your touch-up repair.

CarCareFocus™ Tips:

  • Look for a letter + number combination with 2-digits indicated after "EXT PNT" or "Exterior Paint".

  • If the location of your Vehicle Certification Label was located on a part that had been replaced due to auto body repair, it is possible that the Vehicle Certification Label is incorrect. If this is the case, we are happy to help you locate your OEM Paint Color Code by contacting us here.
